Genre Decision

Hey guys, so I wanted to let you all know how we came up with our final decision for the genre we wanted to pick.

The first genre we considered and researched was romance. Throughout our research we found that we really liked how different aspects like props, color, lighting, and costumes can all help create a romantic setting for the film. We thought that we could really be creative with all of these elements to set the right tone for our opening sequence. We also really liked the realism that is incorporated into romance films, as they try to make the situation seem relatable to engage the audience. One thing we didn't like abut this genre is that it incorporated a lot of ambient sounds, which we felt like could easily make the film seem tacky and unrealistic. We also didn't like that we would have to use two actors, as even though it's important to establish relationships in this genre, it makes it harder for us to plan and film.

The second genre we researched was Comedy. We liked many aspects of this genre, including the use of non-diegetic sounds, like laughing tracks, and diegetic sound like dialogue. We liked how we could think outside the box a lot when it came to creating jokes and humor, and we also felt like we could play around a lot with the editing. For example, we could incorporate split-screens, action matches, and shot-reverse-shots, and this variety of editing commonly found in comedic films can make the film more intriguing. One thing we didn't like about this genre is that a large part of the humor relies on acting, and if we can't find an actor to master the delivery of our jokes, the amusement of the film will vanish. Another aspect we didn't like was the use of voiceovers, as we felt that this could easily subtract from the realism of the film and could make it seem cheesy.

The last genre we researched was horror. What we liked most about horror films is that we can use a lot of low and high angles to establish the power struggle and clearly, but artfully, show who is the victim and who is the villain. We also really liked how horror films tend to use average clothing to depict a certain realism and make the audience feel more in touch with the story and characters. The last thing we really liked about this genre was how ambient sounds, editing, and props can all be used to establish a spooky setting, which is crucial for the genre. We are most interested in incorporating new editing techniques, like jump cuts, that we have never tried before but are very common in this genre. However, one aspect of the genre that didn't appeal to us is that they tend to only use dim lighting, even though we feel that incorporating lighting variety would help make the film more engaging.

After researching and discussing the different aspects of different genres, we came to the conclusion that creating an opening sequence for a horror film will be the best choice for us. This is because we felt that there are many different elements of horror films, like filming and editing techniques, mis-en-scene, and sound that could really help us create an amazing opening sequence. We also decided that practically, a horror film would be the best to film as minimal equipment is needed, and realism is encouraged, which makes it much easier for us. We can't wait to research more and get started with production! See you guys next time.
