Sticking to a Budget
Hey guys! In preparation for filming, I first started by obtaining the props for my group. The first step was to make a list of everything I could possibly need. I figured this out by going back through our storyboard to see what I would need to get for each scene. I concluded that I needed a radio, candles, cooking utensils, flower petals, a clock, a banana, a phone, a TV and remote, a potted plant, medical tubes, an alarm clock, fake blood, and an empty beer bottle. It's a lot of props!
However, to save money, I am going to try to buy as few props as possible, and instead utilize a lot of items that I already have free access too. For example, the airbnb that we will be filming at will already have a TV and remote, so I will not need to bring that separately. For the radio, I already own one that also displays the time, so I will use that one item to act as both the radio and the clock that multiple scenes need. Similarly, I have candles that I can bring from home, and I can collect flower petals from my garden the day that we are filming so they will still be fresh. I also always have bananas around my house, and I know each one of my group members has a phone, so I have that covered as well. Using items from home already saves me a lot of money!
The next thing on the list is cooking utensils. While the airbnb will already have basic plates and utensils for us to use, I do still need to obtain a cutting board for the first scene. I do have one at home, but it isn't in the best condition, but I also do not want to buy one. So, I asked some family members if they had one I could use, and sure enough, I was able to borrow one from my aunt. With that covered, I moved on to finding a potted plant. However, that prop was a little more complicated. Since most potted plants are so large, it would be hard to transport one to our filming location. I brought this issue up to my group, and asked if any of them had a small, desk side potted plant that could be used. Thankfully, Marvin did!
That concludes all of the props I was able to get for free. Since there were so many props that I would need for this 5 minute film, I knew I had to keep a budget in mind. At the end of the day, we are all still high school students who can only afford so much! So, to make things easier for my group, I took it upon myself to try to borrow and find as many props as I could for free. I think I did pretty well! There are still a few more props that I have to buy, but I'll update you all on that next time!
