Final Filming

Hey everyone! It's the moment we've all been waiting for, the filming finale! In this blog I'm going to tell you everything I did to film the final car scene. The first thing I had to do was research! My vision for this scene was to film a car crash that shows why the character was in a coma in the first place. However, there were some obvious limitations to this plan. This included the fact that I didn't exactly have the money, equipment, or knowledge to safely execute a real car scene. Since this scene is so vital for the plot of the film, I knew I needed a way to overcome these obstacles.

I started with some basic research on google. I was able to find YouTube videos showing how to create a car crash scene with no damage! I learned that I can actually create a car crash scene with some simple editing techniques. All I had to do was experiment with some craft angles!

So, when my group met next, I knew what I needed to do. I planned to have this car crash happen at an intersection, where one car is driving forwards, and another car "crashes" into the side of the car. I found an area where there were stop signs, and that worked perfectly. I was going to have the drunk character run a stop sign and run straight into an oncoming car.

The first step to make this happen was film each car's movements separately. I first started with the car without the stop sign. I filmed the actor driving forward, and had them stop the car right in the middle of the intersection. Where the car stopped, I placed a cone that I had brought. This was gonna mark how far the other driver was supposed to drive forwards. We moved the first car out of the way, I directed the driver at the stop sign to start moving, and had them run through the stop sign and stop right before hitting the cone. With these two shots filmed, I could then edit it to have the footage overlap one another, and with some special effects, I can make it seem like the cars did in fact crash. I should also clarify that the area we were filming did not have any cars coming through, so it was not dangerous in any way!

After that, I filmed a few shots of the driver inside the car, a close up of the beer bottle, and a few shots of blood on the floor. Finally, I filmed a few shots of actors filming the crash and looking distressed to act as witnesses to the crash. With that, the first round of filming was finished! See you guys next time!
