Editing Blog: The Quest for Music
Hey guys! After finishing filming all of the scenes, it was time for me to begin the editing process. The first aspect I focused on was getting the perfect music. For the film, I already had one song picked out that I knew I wanted to use, the song "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell. For the other song I am using for the rest of the film... well I still had to pick that out.
However, I ran into a small problem. I was unable to use the song by Rockwell because it was copyrighted music. To try and find a way around this, I decided to message the artist himself to ask for permission to use his song. The only issue was that when I looked up the artist it said the only social media platform he had was Facebook, and his last post was from 3 years ago! Finding no other way to contact him, I decided to send Rockwell a message through Facebook and see if he responds. I really want to be able to use this song in my film, especially since I had a whole shot dedicated to showing the song playing on the main character's phone. It will be very unfortunate if I don't get a response from Rockwell because I will have to reshoot that scene, but there is still time for him respond!
After messaging the artist, I decided to look for some other songs that I could use for the non-diegetic sound in the film. This time, I didn't make the mistake of using any popular songs that are hard to get permission to use. Instead, I looked on websites like Epidemic Sound, Soundstripe, and Artlist to find royalty free music that I could download. At first, I wasn't really sure about the genre of music I wanted to use, but I did know that I wanted a song that was both fast paced and dramatic.
After looking at the first two websites and not finding much that peaked my interest, I looked on the website Artlist and found it to be very helpful. The website split up their music into different categories, and one of the categories was films/trailer. I searched in this category and played samples of many different songs. I found that a genre I really liked was electronic music because I felt it created the feeling of suspense that I was looking for.
I found two song options to pick from, "From the Ashes" by DELNOVA and "Lockdown" by Roman P. The next step is to edit the music onto the edited scenes and see which option fits best with the film. I'll be sure to let you know which scene I pick and if the first artist, Rockwell, responds to my message. See you then!
