Title Research: Terrifier 2

Welcome back everyone! For our final opening sequence, we decided to go back and analyze the "Terrifier 2," as we thought it was an excellent fit for the horror genre.

1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

During the opening sequences, the main title card with name of the movie - which is, "Terrifier 2," is displayed. Along with the title card, the opening credits which includes the name of the writer and director, who are listed under the same name and the names of actors starring in the movie are included. Finally, the list of those involved in costume, production, music, makeup and hair are placed, with the names of the director of photography, executive producers and co-producers listed shortly after. One of the final credits displayed in the opening sequence is the name under the title, "Produced by."

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

Some images prioritized in the opening sequence would include the costume wings that the teenage girl show in the opening sequence is constructing, along with all the candles she is surrounded by. Throughout the entire sequence, the scenes consistently and frequently revert back to show the candles, making them the center of focus.

3.  What connotations do these images carry?

The candles can carry connotations of being sacred, mysterious or possible dangerous as it is flammable. The wings carry similar connotations of mystery, but they also could represent freedom or escape.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

With the genre being horror, the outset immediately creates a feeling of unsettlement and slight fear by displaying what seems to be the antagonist and face of the movie, a murderous clown. In this scene, the clown is ecstatic as they mop the floor clean of the blood of their murder, which establishes a disturbing feeling.

5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

To appeal to its audience, which is mostly likely a younger audience, the film stars a young teenage girl in the opening sequence who is dressed in the common fashion and makeup trends in accordance to the most recent years. She is also placed in what seems to be a typical bedroom belong to a teenage girl living in 2023 with room decorations that match.

6.  How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

From the outset of the opening sequence, the filming uses a lot of tilts that start from the clown's feet and gradually tilt upwards to the face of the clown - this happens at least twice less than 30 seconds apart. By starting at the feet where clown shoes are shown, it creates brief confusion and is slightly unsettling. It then tilts upwards to connect the clown shoes to a character and face, who seems as carefree as possible. The camera also views the clown from almost always a medium close-up shot and keeps the clown at eye-level with the camera. This establishes the importance of the character and emphasizes the lack of emotion despite the actions of the character. Sound and music is also utilized to create this unsettling feeling. With the non-diegetic sound or music placed, the first sequence is almost comedic even though the clown is cleaning up a gruesome murder. It also includes the sloshing and slamming of the mop and trash bag as diegetic sound to really place the audience in the movie.
