Finding the Perfect Music

Hey guys, I'm here to update you on the next step in the production process for our Extra Gum commercial. I talked to my group mates to figure out what we had left to do and how we were going to get it done. Since we had already finished the filming process, all we had left to do was to edit the commercial. I offered to find the music for the commercial while they worked on editing the clips together.

I knew I wanted a song that had both slower and faster paced portions. I wanted to use the slower portions in the beginning of the commercial when the actors are uncomfortable with one another. Then, I wanted to use the faster, upbeat portion of the song towards the end of the commercial to truly show the positive effect that the gum had on the characters by bringing them together.

I first had the idea of using a classical or instrumental soundtrack so that it would not distract too much from the actual scenes. I went on amazon and apple music and searched for classical songs. I listened to different classical playlists and songs, but I felt that none of them truly matched the type of image and theme that our commercial tries to portray. While the songs did have both slow and upbeat portions, I felt that a classical soundtrack wouldn't match the type of people we are portraying nor the audience we would be trying to reach. This is because the actors in our commercial are teenagers, and therefore, I felt that a classical soundtrack wouldn't match them or the actions they are preforming. Also, because the characters are younger, we are more likely to reach a younger audience, and therefore, a more popular song would be a better choice.

Therefore, I decided to move away from classical music and thought of other types of music I could use. I thought that I should try to find a modern song with lyrics that would still have those same variations in pace. I scrolled through my own playlist to try to get some ideas. While scrolling, I came across the song "Redbone" by Childish Gambino. I listened to the song and saw that it had the perfect pace that I was looking for. I felt that the song matched the idea of two teenage photography students and that it could truly show the transition from awkward to happy. I showed the song to the people in my group and explained the idea. They loved the song and so we decided to use it for the soundtrack of the commercial. I can't wait to see the rest of this commercial come together, as I feel that we have some great ideas to work with.
